Friends of Liberia’s Forgotten Players

OUR STORY

Friends of Liberia’s Forgotten Players

We share values that are a big part of why we started our foundation. We were taught to give back and to be optimistic about the future.
From early childhood, we each saw how our parents helped in our local communities, and we were taught that anything is possible. Unfortunately, factors outside of anyone’s control make it hard for some people to reach their potential: things like when they were born, who their parents are, where they grew up, whether they are a boy or a girl.
We wake up every day determined to use our resources to create a world where everyone can lead a healthy and productive life. Most importantly, we believe this: All lives have equal value. That’s why we made the decision to help others.

The challenge when we started out was how to do that in a meaningful and high-impact way. We were drawn to things that sprang from our experience, so we began helping our friends in Liberia, the Forgotten Players. As we read and studied more, we also became curious about inequalities further from the United States.

One day, we watched a Facebook video/posting of one our friends and former player crying for help. That blew our minds. As Friends and former players, it hit us especially hard. If there’s anything worse than a human being can’t get necessities, we said to each other, let organize ourselves and help.

We started consulting experts, inquiring about other stories about other forgotten players that we wanted to help, and researching other issues that they are facing and poverty more deeply. We tried to figure out how we might use our voices to raise the visibility of our forgotten players, and how our resources could start saving and transforming lives.
We are committed to measuring progress so we can see what’s working and what isn’t.

How we work

To bring about the kinds of changes that will help people live healthier and more productive lives, we seek to understand the world’s inequities. Whether the challenge is lack of necessities in Liberia, we listen and learn so we can identify pressing problems that get too little attention. Then we consider whether we can make a meaningful difference in the person life.

Leadership

The foundation’s leaders come from a broad range of backgrounds and have a diversity of expertise and experience that spans science and technology, public policy, education, communications, law enforcement, and business. Our leaders are guided by the foundation’s mission to create a world in which every person can live a healthy and productive life.
